THE TENARIS ADVANTAGE
Take a look at how our innovation departments work in Tenaris.
product and service differentiation.
manufacturing costs, while increasing product quality.
R&D is centrally managed from Amsterdam, with research teams distributed in:
(*) Locations incorporated with
the acquisition of TenarisShawcor.
Tenaris invests around USD$ 60 million yearly, reaching a total of USD$ 258 million over the last five years.
This system is completed with the network of top-class external laboratories and technology suppliers in several countries.
This year, 230 projects
are under execution.
These are some of the areas
in which our projects are focused:
Development of products for extreme conditions, such as high-pressure and ultra-deepwater applications.
This includes the new premium connections and advanced dope-free solutions to optimize performance and cost-efficiency.
R&D supports challenging projects like Raia in Brazil. Offshore developments require the highest levels of reliability, experience, project management and flexibility.
Tenaris provides integral, customized solutions, from pipe anufacturing with precise dimensional tolerances to services and accessories.
We supply tubes and vertical integrated components for automotive applications developed through a consolidated network of R&D and component centers.
Integration of R&D teams from TenarisShawcor, focusing on coatings for Line Pipe and OCTG, with facilities in Toronto and Norway now fully integrated into Tenaris’s development network.
New solutions such as drilling with casing, iRun Casing® technology and torque turn monitoring services are supported by 20% of the Product Development Portfolio (PDP), driving differentiation in client offerings.
Significant resources are dedicated to hydrogen, carbon capture, and geothermal solutions, with Tenaris developing products and technologies like THera™ and testing materials for hydrogen and CO2 applications.
Active participation in joint industry programs ensures Tenaris remains at the forefront of energy transition innovation.
Marcelo Ramos|Chief Technology Officer.
"Our R&D efforts are crucial in advancing Tenaris’s capabilities across diverse areas—from extreme condition OCTG and innovative line pipe solutions to cutting-edge service technologies and energy transition initiatives. By continuously pushing the boundaries, we ensure our products and services lead the industry in both performance and sustainability."
Gabriel Cargano|VP Research and Development.
"Our focus on diverse R&D projects reflects Tenaris’s dedication to innovation and excellence. By integrating our global expertise and resources, we are not only advancing our product lines but also addressing the evolving needs of our industry and customers."
These are the activities that help us improve
efficiency at our manufacturing facilities:
The R&D system supports key manufacturing processes such as steelmaking, rotary furnaces, piercing, rolling, and heat treatment. It also implements APC (Advanced Process Control)
systems that control key machinery. Furthermore, it enhances threading control through new optical techniques (ADRIS) and develops advanced NDT (non-destructive testing) technologies like ARGUS and ECTIS.
Data science and AI are increasingly used to optimize processes, while best practices for Super13Chromium alloys are continually developed across global facilities.
Beyond formal R&D activities, the team is actively involved in troubleshooting for Quality, Operations, Maintenance, and other departments, often responding quickly and providing on-site support when needed.
The Amsterdam office oversees all R&D activities, managing intellectual property, including patents and trade secrets, and handling legal matters such as NDA agreements and intercompany contracts.
They ensure smooth coordination between internal teams and external partners.
Alberto Nicolini|Measurement Inspection & Quality Tech. Senior Director.
"Our R&D team's work optimizing manufacturing processes is essential for enhancing efficiency and quality at our facilities, creating a gap against our competitors. By leveraging advanced digital signal processing, innovative technology and solutions, we're not just improving our operations but also setting new standards for industry excellence."
Raúl Bedogni|Production Process Innovation Senior Director.
"Our efforts focus on refining key processes and integrating cutting-edge technologies. Implementing advanced process controls, developing new practices for Super13Chromium alloys to enhancing operational support and troubleshooting, we're dedicated to driving progress."
Approximately 65% in tons of OCTG sales and 40% of Line Pipe sales now come from proprietary products developed by the company’s global Technology team.
Regarding process innovation, some of the achievements include Tenaris proprietary PYXIS Electronics together with the Virtual NDT Software CERBERUS, installed in most of the NDT finishing lines worldwide in Tenaris, reaching more than 50 PYXIS units running.
This solution enhances inspection reliability, enabling unique features like the full-length inspection creating a competitive advantage and differentiation.
